The use of ozone in ultrapure water processing has proven to be a rapid and reliable method of microbial control. Ozone is a powerful oxidizing agent characterized by a high degree of chemical instability; for this reason, ozone must be generated on-site either electrolytically or by barrier discharge. Ozonation of ultrapure water is considered a "clean" process and does not produce any undesirable chemical by-products. Unlike traditional chemical disinfectants, ozone dissipates from the treated water due to its own natural decay properties. Because of this, ozone is gaining increasing popularity in electronics, pharmaceuticals, and other ultrapure water-dependent industries.
